Finally, use your guitar polish of choice to give the whole fretboard and the frets a really good shine – just apply the polish and use a clean kitchen towel or cloth to buff it up. Nov 04, 2007 · Hey guys, Ran out of gibson guitar polish, have used that for years. Taking a few dusty ones off the rack today for new strings/cleaning, etc. have to get a few back in rotation.
I usually cover the pickups with masking tape or, if i can, I simply remove the neck. Once the fretboard is clean and the frets are polished go over the fretboard with lemon oil and wipe off the excess.
Some commercial guitar cleaners work great as well, however it is important to make sure you’re using a cleaner, and not a polish, which might leave a smeary residue behind. If your finish is French polish, heavily cracked, or flaking off, don’t put anything on it until you get a professional opinion.
To much of this and you’ll lose your fretboard! One major note to make: Avoid products that are silicone based. They clog up the wood, and don’t allow it to breathe properly, which then becomes hard to clean up and makes for a very messy ordeal. Another major note: Avoid a wax on the fretboard.
