Gro Harlem Brundtland, (born April 20, 1939, Oslo, Norway), Norwegian politician who served three terms as prime minister of Norway (1981, 1986–89, and 1990–96) and later was director general of the World Health Organization (WHO; 1998–2003).
A politician of unusual popularity, Gro Harlem Brundtland was Norway’s first woman prime minister. Born in Oslo, the daughter of a doctor who later became a cabinet minister, Gro Harlem studied medicine in Oslo and qualified as a physician.
Gro Harlem Brundtland has been a member of The Elders since its founding in 2007, bringing to the group her decades of experience as a global leader in public health and sustainable development. She has served as Deputy Chair since May 2013 and assumed the role of Acting Chair in August 2018.
