Beautiful, charming, and talented, Dagny Juel was the central woman in two major cultural centers of the 1890s, Berlin and Krakow. Strindberg and other jilted lovers have vilified her in their works and letters (she is the transparent model for the evil woman in Strindberg’s plays), and her own husband, the Polish writer Przybyszewski, treated her similarly.
