Burn After Reading is clearly intended to be a comedy, but the comedy (as is so often the case with the Coens) remains somewhat inscrutable. It’s like the couple of kids in your class at school who would laugh uproariously at some private joke which completely passed by everybody else.

BURN AFTER READING won’t be everybody’s cup of Gatorade, but if you’re one of the many naysayers who claim to find the film a major letdown after last year’s officially designated Best Pic NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, well, let me just say, I do understand your point.
Still, Burn After Reading is no Fargo. For all its cheek, it’s not actually all that brazen. It doesn’t push the envelope far enough — at least for a Coen brothers movie. It lacks a certain amount inspiration and, well, to paraphrase one character, a point. Not that having a point is a must.

Rather, the comedy, from the writer-director team of Joel and Ethan Coen, takes itself as seriously as its characters take themselves.
